About the 4-7-8 Method
How it Works
The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a rhythmic pattern based on ancient pranayama. It works by activating the parasympathetic nervous system—your body's "rest and digest" mode.
- Inhale (4s): Oxygentates the body.
- Hold (7s): Allows oxygen to circulate.
- Exhale (8s): Forces carbon dioxide out and slows the heart rate.
Source & Science
Popularized by Dr. Andrew Weil, this is described as a "natural tranquilizer for the nervous system." It gains power with repetition.
Why I Made This
Navigating anxiety is a challenge I share with my son. We’ve found that the 4-7-8 breathing technique works wonders, but when you’re trapped in an anxious loop, it’s incredibly difficult to pause and focus on the count. I built this tool to be that anchor for us—a simple, bloat-free reset button that we can bookmark and pull up on any device the moment we need to breathe..
I hope it helps you find a moment of calm. If you want to show your support you can help fund this and other projects at Matty Makes
